Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)
Loose, redundant and nearly hanging extra skin on the upper eyelids and wrinkled, puffy “bags” of the lower eyelids will make anyone look old and tired. Many people begin to notice that family and friends have been asking if they are tired or depressed, etc. It’s all because the eyes are telling this story, regardless of how good you feel or how young you really are. A blepharoplasty is often performed as a solitary procedure, because the eyes are such a focal point for how we interpret a person’s age and mood.
The Consultation
You will have a private, in-depth consultation with Dr. Back where he will review with you everything you want and need to know. After an examination, together you will discuss your goals and his recommendations. All the details of the procedure will be reviewed and you will also have ample time for questions. Typical “before & after” photos as examples are on hand as a part of this process.
The Procedure
This outpatient procedure usually takes 2-3 hours. Most commonly, both the upper and lower eyelids are treated but some patients will only need the upper or lower eyelids addressed. This is a very sophisticated procedure, using very special and small instruments. A blepharoplasty is usually virtually painless postop! The extra upper eyelid skin removal will tighten and smooth as well as create a more open look to the eyes. The puffy bags of the lower lids are fat pockets that are typically removed without an external incision or scar. Swelling and bruising can be dramatic the first day or so but typically almost completely resolves within a week.
The Recovery
Cold compresses and head elevation are the mainstays. Gentle activity may be gradually increased until about a week has passed, generally marking the end of this recovery. Most patients will look great at this time and can begin to re-use their contacts and stop all restrictions.
